Utopian Promise
In the years between the 1600's to the 1750's Puritan and Quakers came to settle in the New World. The New World was where they came to have religious freedom and to create a Utopian society. Puritans believed God was angry and at anytime he could send them to hell.. In the Video "Utopian Promise it talked about when Puritans came to America and what they did. Quakers and Puritans are different because of their religious beliefs. Quakers are open to other beliefs and did not accept minsters. Puritans were strict about their religious and they followed the Bible. In the story "The General History of Virginia" by John Smith the story talked about their struggles at Jamestown and how they manged to get through it, a surprise attack they encountered and what happened at Powhatan's Court. They had trouble with leaders and terrible diseases The Puritan leader must learn how to deal with unexpected troubles. In the story Smith said “he unexpected his returned and had the plot discovered for him much trouble he prevented it”.
In "Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford, he talked about the struggles they encountered and why they came here. The main reason Puritans came to America was for religious freedom. When they arrived in America he said being thus arrived in good harbor, and brought safe to the land, they full upon their knees and blessed God”. The Puritans had believed God did everything for a reason , because there was a reason for everything.
In "Sinner in the Hand of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards he was the preacher at this time and he preached this story. In this story they believed God would decide when it was the right time to be sent to hell. If someone told me that I was going to hell i would be scared for my life because no one know who you are and if you are evil or not. In the story it states “Thus all you that never passed under great change of the heart, by the mighty power of the Spirit of God upon your souls” . The story states that you do not have a promise that your going to hell. So you really do not know what will happen to you.
These three stories lead you up to witch trails because the Puritans were fed up with themselves because they had no idea what and how they were doing to themselves and people around them. They also believed that God was behind everything did throughout their lives and watched them everyday. I do not know anything about witch trails but i think they were probably crazy. The story "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller I think is about witch trail and no one was around to witness stuff happening. McCarthyism is when people hated the communists, and wanted to kill them all. I think that the time period we were studying was very intersting.
